The beautiful Mrs. Dorothy Elaine Lykes, daughter of the late Joe and Ruth Garrett, was born in Harlingen, Texas August 23, 1934. Elaine passed away peacefully in her sleep Saturday January 30, 2021. She attended the public schools in Harlingen, Texas and studied music at University of North Texas. She married her high school sweetheart and love of her life, David Lykes, on January 31, 1954 in the chapel of First Methodist Church of Harlingen. They celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on January 31, 2021. Her marriage was blessed with two wonderful children, Linda Lykes Wieland and David G. Lykes, four amazing granddaughters, and eight adorable great grandchildren. Elaine's incredible gift for music was apparent at an early age when she began studying voice and piano, including formal training at the Julliard School of Music. Elaine was an active member in her church choir, performing numerous solos throughout the years. Her God-given gift of a beautiful voice was shared with many throughout the Rio Grande Valley performing on television, community theater, and accompanied by longtime friend, Jean Jentsch Elaine, was a guest soloist in churches, weddings, and funerals. Elaine was a stay-at-home mom, filling her home with love, music, and guidance, praying daily for and with her family. On Sunday morning the home was awakened by her at the piano vocalizing for that Sunday's music special. She is survived by her husband, David Lykes; daughter, Linda Lykes Wieland and son-in-law Arnold Wieland; son David G. Lykes and daughter-in-law Annette Lykes; her granddaughters: Ashley Wall, Erica Visser, Lauren Foster, and Katy Kenyon; along with eight great grandchildren; half-sisters, Jonelle Karraker and Julia Harris; along with many loved and cherished family members. A time of visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 8th, 2021 at The Worship Place in Sun City, Texas. The funeral service will follow the visitation at 11:00 a.m. and Mrs. Lykes will be laid to rest at Capital Parks Cemetery in Pflugerville, Texas. Memorials honoring Elaine should be made to the Children at Heart Foundation at 1101 N Mays Street, Round Rock, Texas 78644 directed to the David and Elaine Lykes Scholarship Fund.
