Edward Mercer "Ted" Sheldon
Help us celebrate Edward! Please share your stories and photos, and invite others who remember Edward.
Ted Sheldon (76) passed away on October 13, 2021, from complications after a stroke several months earlier.
He was born in Chicago on 6 August 1945 and grew up in Highland Park, IL. Ted was an All-American swimmer on the high school relay team and went on to Beloit College where he was captain of the swim team. While at Beloit College he met his future wife, Marianne Weber, and they married in 1969 while Ted was serving in the Navy. He was discharged as a Lieutenant in 1971 and returned to Chicago where he joined the advertising sales staff of the Chicago Tribune. Ted received his MBA from the University of Chicago. The family moved to Darien, CT in 1978 when Ted was transferred to the paper's New York office. He enjoyed many years of boating on Long Island Sound, skiing in New England, building and restoring vintage cars, and travel. Ted's chili and buffalo wings were legendary at his annual Super Bowl parties. Often the only male in a household of females, Ted found his best friend in Bear, his canine "Neuffie" companion. After retiring in 2001 and finally deciding the charm of frozen winters was over, Ted and Marianne retired to The Landings in 2009 where he added golf to his other activities.
Ted will be sorely missed by Marianne, his wife of almost 52 years, and his daughters, Lisa Hoguet (Ramsay) of Marblehead, MA, Hilary Talocco (Nick) of Louisville, CO and Lindsay Sheldon of Chestertown, MD. He was fondly known as "Grumpy" by his grandchildren (and some of his golfing buddies), Ashley and Courtney Hoguet and Mia, Emma and Marshall Talocco. Ted is also survived by a half-sister, Kathy Bogenberger (Jim) of Lexington, NC and Webster, FL. He was predeceased by his parents, John W. and Marjorie (Mercer) Sheldon, a sister, Barbara Putz, and an infant son, Edward Russell Sheldon. Ted has gone to take the Bear for a walk now - we'll catch up later. Donations can be made to the Savannah Humane Society or a charity of your choice.
