Edward George Mein, a versatile self-made entrepreneur, passed away on April 5, 2023. Ed was raised in Berkeley, California, and attended Saint Mary's High School (Class of 1947), where he played football. At 17, Ed joined the Army Air Force and was stationed in Agana, Guam, and Tachikawa Air Force Base in Japan, where he was the administrative assistant to the base's commanding officer and also played football. Ed loved the fact that he type up his own discharge papers just as the Korean War was starting. Returning home, Ed joined the San Leandro Police Department and studied criminology at UC Berkeley. The highlight of his professional life was serving as a San Leandro police officer. Ed developed the resourcefulness and compassion for people that served him throughout his life, plus an endless catalog of captivating stories. He met his future wife, Rosemary Meehan, a teacher at San Leandro High School, on a blind date in 1956. They were married in February 1959.In 1960, Ed left the police department to pursue his interest in real estate and construction. Additionally, he formed a mortgage lending company with his father, George E. Mein. Together they began developing real estate and working closely with Owens Financial Group on many joint ventures. He later started Mercury Funding Group, Inc. where he funded many loans and gave out many company pens.Ed was a founding member of Civic Bank of Commerce (later City National Bank) and an 18-Year member of their Board of Directors. During his Board tenure, Ed served on the bank's loan committee and took an active role in the disposition of the bank's real estate company. Ed also served as President of the Sunnyside Corporation in Lake Tahoe, California, overseeing the construction and completion of the hotel, marina, and popular lakeside restaurant. Ed served on the Contra Costa County Grand Jury and enjoyed being part of the Contra Costa County Sheriff's posse. Ed was a natural athlete and a beautiful skier. He served on the National Ski Patrol and enjoyed racing sailboats on the bay, flying small airplanes, guns, fishing, tennis, and golf. Later, his passion turned to Bridge, and he was very proud to have earned "Master Points." Ed was a member of the Metropolitan Yacht Club and The San Francisco Yacht Club and sailed his boats in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. His claim to fame was navigating through the Panama Canal. Ed and Rosemary raised their three children in Lafayette, California. They were active members of the Orinda Country Club for 50 years and also served on the Acalanes High School Parent and Boosters Board. They were passionate Bear Backers at Cal, where they enthusiastically rooted for the Golden Bears for over 60 years. Edward was predeceased by his grandson, Daniel Mein. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Rosemary; daughter Andrea DeWitt (Bill) of Orinda, son Eric of Tahoma, son Kevin of Lafayette and his grandchildren, Patrick and Katie DeWitt, Samantha Mein and Reese, Kieran, and Delaney Mein. A memorial mass will be held at Santa Maria Church in Orinda, California, on May 24 at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to East Bay Hospice (www.hospiceeastbay.org (http://www.hospiceeastbay.org)). This organization supported Edward with dignity, resourcefulness, and love at the very end of his well-lived life.
