
Edward Eugene Kelly

Edward Eugene Kelly died on March 13, 2023 at his home at The Cypress of Charlotte. He was born September 24, 1945 in Charlotte, the son of David Grey Kelly and Margaret Rebecca Oliver Kelly.
Mr. Kelly was an honor graduate at South Mecklenburg High School in 1964. He graduated from Pfeiffer College Magna Cum Laude in 1968, majoring in history and minoring in German. Later he earned the Master of Arts Degree from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 1971, majoring in Modern European History and specializing in the French Revolution.
After leaving Chapel Hill, Mr. Kelly taught history for forty years, thirty-seven at Charlotte Country Day School. He was The Richard V. Bray Master Instructor of History, and he served as department head and academic dean. In these capacities and in conjunction with the History, English, and Fine Arts with the 9th and 10th grade European History and World Cultures courses. Mr. Kelly and German teacher, Erica Deshaies, developed a program to study the Holocaust which culminated in an annual trip to Washington, D.C. during which students visited and experienced The Holocaust, The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Mr. Kelly was a recipient of the Alumnae Faculty Award, the Faculty Exceptional Performance Award, and was inducted into the Honorary Alumni Association. He loved teaching and leading student groups to Europe, especially Germany, Greece, and Italy.
Mr. Kelly loved his family deeply. He is survived by his brother, David Grey Kelly, Jr; his sister -in-law, Janet C. Kelly; a nephew, David Grey Kelly, III (Heather); two nieces, Carolyn Vick and Crystal Kelly; eight grandnephews and grandnieces; and his extended family Virginia Touma, Brad Touma, Rene Touma, Carter Touma, Virginia Hart Touma, David A. Tillman, Stuart Pfeifer, and James D. DuPuy.
Mr. Kelly was a devoted member of Christ Episcopal Church where he was a member of The Christ Choir for more than forty years. He also served as a lay reader and chalice bearer.
A memorial service will be held at Christ Church on Saturday March 25th at 1:00 p.m.. followed by a reception in the Blue Room at the Church.
