Edward Rogers Howe, 71 died suddenly Friday, April 2, 2021 at his home in Tunbridge, VT with his wife Nancy by his side. He was born April 9, 1949 in Randolph, VT the son of Ernest L. and Emily A. (Rogers) Howe. He attended school in Tunbridge and later in South Royalton, where he graduated from South Royalton High School in 1967.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1970. He was hired in October of 1970 as an auto mechanic at Herb Crawford's Autoland in South Royalton. He worked at Crawford's until 2010 when the garage closed and he retired. He also served one year as the last elected Road Commissioner for the town of Tunbridge, was the Tunbridge Green Up Coordinator, Tunbridge Fence Viewer and reading mentor at the Tunbridge Central School. He also played Santa Claus in South Royalton for three years, was a duck wrangler in the Friends of Tunbridge Fair Annual Duck Race and ran the tractor shuttle service at the Tunbridge Fair for six years.
On September 24, 1988 he married Nancy Bascom of Royalton, VT at their future homesite. They have lived on the hill since 1989.
He enjoyed reading, movies, all kinds of music, photography, canoeing, cutting fire wood and ice cream. He loved all his dogs and cats and everyone else's too. He enjoyed his trips to Middlebury, VT with his best friend, cousin and "partner in crime" Bob Rogers, which would always include a stop at A & W restaurant for lunch. When Edward was younger he was a member of FFA, 4-H and was also a member of the Tunbridge Town Team Baseball and Softball teams. He was a member of the South Tunbridge Methodist Church.
Following his retirement he did many things for the people of Tunbridge, taking part in Neighbors Helping Neighbors and the Tunbridge Food Shelf, mowing lawn for the Tunbridge Church and South Tunbridge Methodist Church, making donuts and baking for his friends and neighbors in town.
He is survived by his wife Nancy Howe of Tunbridge; two brothers, Randall Howe and his wife Robin of Claremont, NC and Arnold Howe and his partner, Kim of Coeur d 'Alene, ID; two Sisters, Elaine Howe of Tunbridge and Janette Ducey of Berkshire, VT. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Charles and wife Karman Bascom of South Royalton, brother-in-laws Lynn Bascom of Middlebury and Lyle Bascom and partner, Sue of Charlotte, Vt. Also surviving him is his aunt Anita Nichols of Northfield, Vt and several nieces, nephews and numerous cousins.
A memorial funeral service will be held later this spring on Saturday, May 15, 2021 at 2pm in the Pavilion Building on the Tunbridge Fairgrounds, Tunbridge, VT. A private burial will be held at the Riddall Cemetery in Tunbridge, at the convenience of the family.
