Obituary
We celebrate the remarkable life of Edward Ernest Goode—a man whose warmth and wisdom left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Born on June 19, 1941, in Boston, Edward excelled academically, graduating from Boston Latin School before attending Howard University, where he graduated magna cum laude and joined Phi Beta Kappa. His pursuit of knowledge led him to Yale University Divinity School, where he graduated in 1967. Shortly after, Edward was ordained to the ministry of the United Church of Christ (UCC).
Edward served in various ministry roles, including as a pastor in Memphis and, most notably, at the Church of the Evangel, UCC, in Brooklyn, New York. During his nearly two decades at Evangel, Edward’s powerful sermons and genuine compassion endeared him to the congregation, especially the youth, many of whom kept in touch with him throughout his life. Edward later continued his ministry with the UCC’s Chicago offices, bringing support and guidance to new communities.
A man of deep faith and unshakable belief in human goodness, Edward lifted those around him, offering encouragement and a listening ear. He embodied community, compassion, and a commitment to service.
Edward was preceded in death by his mother, Madeline B. Goode; father, Edward F. Goode, Sr.; younger brother, Lewis I. Goode; and beloved godmother, Georgia Parris. He leaves behind his niece, Rima Goode; cousins, Bettye Rosalie Harris, Janice Watts-Bostic, and Alonzo Fitzgerald Watts, Jr.; his cherished goddaughters, Makeda Black and Allyson Shaw; and a host of relatives and friends.
Edward’s spirit remains in our hearts. Thank you, Edward, for your love.
