Edward "Ed" Birk, 86, passed away peacefully on November 3rd, 2024, surrounded by family. Born on April 21, 1938, Ed was a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend.
In 1964, he married the love of his life, Lorraine, on November 14th. Together they built a life based on love, respect, and family, raising their daughter Jennifer, who will forever cherish his memory.
Ed served his country in the Wisconsin 32nd Infantry of the National Guard from 1961-1962 and was mobilized during the Berlin Crisis. Ed dedicated many years to his career as a Design Engineer at APV Crepaco, where he designed many products in dairy processing equipment and holds several patents for some of his designs. He was an avid golfer at Koshkonong Mounds Country Club and spent many days on the golf course with great friends. He did get that elusive hole-in-one! Ed also bowled during the winter months where he ended up scoring several perfect 300 games.
Ed graduated from Fort Atkinson High School in 1957. Prior to this time, he started a marching band in his neighborhood during the summertime. Ed was a devoted member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Fort Atkinson, WI, where he found a community of faith and fellowship.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Lorraine Birk; daughter, Jennifer Schroeder and son-in-law, Steve Schroeder; brother, Jim (Vicki) Birk; nieces Karen (Paul Behling) Birk, Barb Birk, Jamie Birk, Kelly Birk, and Stacy (Jennae) Tomlinson; niece Laurie (Paul) Sullivan and nephew, Carl Jr. (Myrna) Birk; great nieces and nephews Kim (Jon) Zarnstorff, Mike (Alana) Sullivan, Erin Sullivan and Dan Sullivan and numerous great nieces and nephews. Ed was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Ina, brothers, Carl Sr. (Margaret) and Leroy, and sister-in-law Barbara (Roger) Collins.
Ed's life was marked by his sharp intellect, warmth, and the deep bonds he formed with those around him. His legacy will be cherished by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
A visitation will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church 301 S. High St, Fort Atkinson at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 12th, with a service to follow at 11:00. There will then be a graveside service and a luncheon open to all at the church afterwards. As an expression of sympathy you may wish to consider memorials to St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
