Edmund Kirby-Smith passed away at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center on Friday, November 19th, 2021. Edmund was born in Washington D.C. on March 15th, 1944 to the late Frances Darlington Simpson and Dr. Hayden West Kirby-Smith. Edmund graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington D.C. and from Wake Forest University in 1967 with a B.A. in History. Edmund was drafted into the United States Army and was stationed at Ft. Knox from 1969 to 1971. He returned to Winston-Salem and, while working at Baptist Hospital, met Wanda Boger Kirby-Smith, his wife of 44 years. Edmund later worked for Reynolds Health Care, ACS Consulting, and retired as an Investigator for the North Carolina Medical Board. Edmund was a devoted fan of the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, the Washington Redskins, the Atlanta Braves, and he also enjoyed playing tennis.
He is preceded in death by both of his parents and by his sister, Virginia Kirby-Smith. He is survived by his wife Wanda, daughter Melody Whitaker (Brian) of Michigan, son Ethan Edmund Kirby-Smith of Charlotte, daughter Cassie Kirby-Smith Gayer (Brett) of Kernersville, and by 4 grandchildren: Sarah and Hannah Whitaker, Caroline Gayer, and another granddaughter on the way. He is also survived by his identical twin brother Hayden Kirby-Smith (Eileen) of Kernersville, by sister Carolina Kirby-Smith and brothers Lee Kirby-Smith, Reynold Kirby-Smith, and Stefan Onacewicz - as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Winston-Salem, NC on Sunday, November 28th at 2:00 pm. A burial will take place in the cemetery at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee near other members of the family, including great grandfather General Edmund Kirby-Smith.
