Edith Virginia (Ginny) Schmidt, 91, beloved friend, wife, mother and grandmother, passed peacefully on Sunday, May 22, 2022, joining her beloved husband in spirit, David James Schmidt. She is predeceased by her parents, Walter Winters and Edith Donovan and her youngest brother, Robert Winters, and survived by her sister, Judith Winters and her brother, Richard Winters.
Ginny was born September 12, 1930 in the Town of Tuxedo in Orange, New York. She grew up surrounded and loved by a community of close friends and family in Sloatsburg, New York, and after graduating from Suffern High School became a model in New York City.
In 1950 Ginny married her sweetheart, David James Schmidt. Together, for 65 years, they lived a fulfilling life, blessed with family, friends, and their three beloved daughters and five grandchildren. Ginny had many interests. She loved to swim, bowl, golf, and go boating. She enjoyed sewing, music, gardening, making flower arrangements, and painting. Ginny was very social and enjoyed parties and social activities with friends. She loved to travel with her husband, exploring the many regions of the globe.
Ginny enjoyed serving her community and was an active member of the Congregational Church in Mystic, especially singing in the choir and participating in the Holiday Bazaar. She joined many organizations including the Mystic Women’s Club, Groton Garden Club, and League of Women Voters. She volunteered at the Mystic Women’s Club Thrift Shop, Pequot Seapost Nature Center and Meals on Wheels. She was also very active in the anti-nuclear protests in the 1980s.
In her final years at Stoneridge Retirement Home, Ginny enjoyed making new friends, singing with the choral group, participating in garden planning, floral arranging, and learning to play billiards.
Ginny will be greatly missed by her daughters Laurelyn Gavitt, Linda Santos, Lisa Timbers and their families. Her five grandchildren, Travis Santos, Megan and Greg Gavitt, and Becky and Will Timbers, and her two great grandchildren Eve and Wilder Timbers, meant the world to her.
