Earlene A. Thompson, 92, died April 21, 2022, at the Brookdale Assisted Living Facility in Stuart, FL.
She was born to Earl and Jennie Kingsbury in Alpena, MI, where she was raised with siblings Darlene, Beverly and Lanny. She enjoyed sharing stories of her work at Alpena General Hospital and Pickett's Drug Store before graduating from Alpena High School in 1947. She married Richard D. Thompson after his return from service in World War II. They began their 59-year marriage working side-by-side as owners of Thompson Sales and Service in Spruce and later Alpena. In retirement, they wintered in Hobe Sound, FL, and enjoyed summers on their beautiful farm in Spruce and property on Hubbard Lake.
After her husband, Dick, died in 2007, Earlene reunited with her high school sweetheart, Donald McNeil, and the two of them enjoyed nearly nine years together in Alpena and wintering in Florida, traveling and cruising.
Earlene was preceded in death by her parents, loving husband Richard Thompson, sons Steven (1953) and Kim (2014), her companion, Donald McNeil, and siblings Darlene (Kingsbury) Payne, and Lanny Kingsbury.
She is survived by her beloved children living in Hobe Sound, FL: Lou Ann Prestegard, Terri Ortiz and Glenn Thompson; her grandchildren Elizabeth Thompson and husband Kevin Crevier of Highland, MI; Jeffrey Thompson of Lake Orion, MI and Andrew Ortiz of East Lansing, MI; daughter-in-law Sharon (Kim) Thompson of Spruce, MI; step-grandson John Kloka and wife Mary of Hobe Sound, FL; sister Beverly Kingsbury Pearson and sister-in-law Mary Sue (Lanny) Kingsbury, both of Alpena, MI; several nieces and nephews, and her "other kids", Daniel McNeil (Christie Tobey), and Mary and Edwin Hall of Alpena, MI.
A memorial service will be held at Spruce Presbyterian Church, Friday, July 1, 2022, at 4:00 p.m. followed by graveside interment.
