Durran William Kaiser, son of Mildred (Mellenbach) and William Kaiser, was born May 6, 1946 at Hoven. He was brought up on the family farm one mile east of Hoven. He attended St. Anthony's Parochial School and Hoven High School, graduating with the Class of 1964. Durran then started a hay hauling business in addition to helping on the farm. From 1965-1971, he was a soldier in the South Dakota Army National Guard. Following basic training, he returned to Hoven and resumed hauling hay and farming. He purchased the Ted Gutenkauf house in Hoven in 1973. Durran married Sandra Peterson on January 26, 1974 in Hoven and they settled in Hoven. The death of Durran's father in 1975 prompted him to go into farming and ranching full time. In spite of declining health the past few years, Durran maintained an interest in the farm until the day he died. He was a member of St. Anthony's Church and John J. Peters American Legion Post No. 159, Hoven, SD. Early in their marriage, Durran and Sandra enjoyed annual fishing trips to Canada. After kids came along, they spent countless weekends camping on the Missouri River. Many great times were had and stories were told around the campfire.
Durran is survived by his son, Michael (Amanda) Kaiser, of Hoven; his daughter, Tanya (John) Berndt, of Aberdeen; and five grandchildren-Tyler and Mason Berndt and Jordan, April, and Michelle Kaiser.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra, on October 13, 2003; his father, William, on October 12, 1975; and his mother, Mildred, on December 31,2010.
Casketbearers will be Lance Kaiser, Luke Kaiser, and Jerad Simon of Tolstoy; Jesse Huber of Hoven; and grandsons-Tyler and Mason.
