Dudley Hugh Johnston, 89, of Germantown, TN died peacefully on February 4, 2021. He was a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a recipient of the Wright Brothers "Master Pilot" award.
Dudley was born on March 23, 1931 in Tampa, FL to Joseph and Minnie Johnston.
In 1947, he took his first flying lesson in St. Petersburg, FL and began his love of flying. In 1948 he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He flew as a fighter pilot, bomber pilot and transport pilot. After retiring from the Air Force in 1968 he flew as a corporate pilot for W.R. Grace, Western Leasing, and FedEx. When he retired from FedEx in 1999 he flew chartered planes for various clients for several years.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jane Atherstone Johnston, three children: Jeanette (Doug, Jr.) Carpenter, Thomas Johnston, Matthew (Elizabeth) Johnston, six grandchildren: Douglas (Hannah) Carpenter III, Jared (Emily) Carpenter, Zachary (Kelli) Carpenter, Lori (Javan) McClung, Isabella Johnston, Maggie Johnston, six great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Josephine Smith and June Iverson.
A PRIVATE Memorial Service celebrating his Life will be held at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 2404 Kirby Rd., Memphis, TN 38119, on Saturday, February 13 at 1:00 pm. The service is Private due to Covid restrictions at the church.

Any memorials can be given to Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 2404 Kirby Road, Memphis, TN 38119 - designated for the building fund or the youth ministry.
He will be interred at the West TN State Veterans Cemetery.
