In Celebration of Life
DUANE JOHN SHORT
July 27th, 1936 to July 4, 2022
Duane John Short, 85, of Rockford, died at 2:25 p.m. Monday July 4, 2022 in his home. He was born in Rockford on July 27, 1936 to Leland and Gertrude (Weust) Short.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Sue; brother Burdett (Judi) Short; daughters Kim (Duane) Anderson, Pam (Geoff) Reese; son, Mike (Mindy) Short; fifteen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. Predeceased in death by son, Thomas (Kathy) Short, and sister, Audrey Higgison.
Duane graduated from West HS in 1954. Married Sue Staman September 21, 1957. He was a hardworking and gifted accountant. He worked for Rockford Die and Tool more than 25 years and retired from Adapt Plastics after another 35 years of service in December 2019.
A tremendous servant, Duane was an active member of Central Christian Church since he was in his twenties and served as an elder, teacher, and many other roles.
His hobbies included fishing (FEFE trips), gardening and antiquing. In fact, he and his best friend Don Rubel owned Big D’s Antiques located in Rockton, Illinois. This is where many of us learned the term “junking” or often heard the phrase “50 to 60% off everything in the store today but the books”. Duane loved the Black Hills of South Dakota and was always helping to trim trees, pick weeds, and beautify the area known as Apple Springs.
Duane was known for his generosity to others and his willingness to serve. Many of us learned over the years if you shared with Duane a “need” he would often show up the next day with the very thing you mentioned in passing. He was thoughtful, kind, and the world needs more Duane John Shorts. His was a life truly lived and will be sorely missed by all.
In lieu of flowers, it is the desire of the family memorial gifts to one of the charities they supported: Daretoserve.org/donate-now/ (http://daretoserve.org/donate-now/)
