Duane L. Scranton, 87, of Shelburne Line Rd., passed away April 12, 2022.
Duane was born in Guilford, VT on April 18, 1934 the son of Ivan and Mildred (Franklin) Scranton. He graduated from Brattleboro High School, class of 1953. Over the years Duane and his classmates got together regularly and he hosted the 60th Class Reunion at his farm with a pig roast. He always used his truck to pull the class float in the annual reunion parades. He will be missed at the upcoming 70th reunion.
He was married to Nancy Jane (Tyler) on October 29, 1955 in West Dummerston, VT.
Duane joined the US Army in 1957 and was stationed in Korea. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant in 1961. He also served two years in the Vermont National Guard.
He moved to Colrain in 1963 and became a dairy farmer. He purchased the Windswept Valley Farm in 1964. In 1977 he purchased his first big rig and became a long-haul trucker. His wife and sons continued to operate the farm while he was away.
Duane was an independent trucker before he drove for Landstar/Inway trucking. His traveling took him to all the 48 states and he was very proud of his accident free driving record. In later years he was a trucker for JS Rae Construction and retired from trucking at the age of 80.
He served as selectman for the Town of Colrain for 13 consecutive terms, spanning 39 years from 1974 to 2013. In the 1970's he was also a reserve police officer for emergencies.
Duane loved horses, watching westerns, listening to country music and traveling.
Survivors include his wife Nancy, two sons; Michael Scranton, Mark Scranton and his wife Katie, all of Colrain, grandchildren; Brian Scranton, Liza (Drew) Pantermehl and their daughter Jane, Kelsey Scranton, Rebecca Scranton, Jamie Hunkler and his family and Jillian Jacques and her family.
Duane was predeceased by a son Timothy Scranton.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 30 at 11:00 am, at the Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home, 40 Church St., Shelburne Falls.
There are no calling hours and burial will be at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Colrain Volunteer Ambulance or the Massachusetts 4H program.
