Duane Ronald Petrie passed away peacefully on Sunday July 21st, 2024, in Anacortes, WA at the age of 91. Duane was born January 9th, 1933, in Walla Walla, WA to Elmer and Margaret Petrie. He was raised in the farming community of Touchet, WA and graduated from Touchet High School in 1951. After one year of college, Duane enlisted with the United States Air Force serving during the Korean War. He was a Staff Sargent stationed at Ramey Air Force Base in Puerto Rico.
Duane returned to Washington in 1956, to help his parents run a chicken ranch at Dewey Beach in Anacortes. This is where Duane met his first wife Elvia Harvey. They married in 1957 and raised their three children, Kelly, Mike, and Tim, in Anacortes.
Duane retired from General Chemical in 1995, as an Operations Supervisor. He was instrumental in the startup of the plant at Marches Point. He was also a volunteer firefighter at Summit Park Fire Department in Anacortes for nineteen years.
Duane's true passion was teaching and mentoring youth especially his own children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. With over 50 years of service to the Boy Scouts of America, Duane earned his Wood Badge Beads in 1969, was a crew adviser for a Philmont Trek in 1980, was active in the Order of the Arrow culminating in The Vigil Honor, and received the prestigious Silver Beaver Award in 2007.
In February 1997, Duane met Diana Duquesne. They married the following October and honeymooned in a motorhome traveling for two months to California, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming. They continued their road trips for the next 10 years, putting over 100,000 miles on their motorhome, visiting 45 states including a trip to Alaska in 1999. They also traveled to England and Scotland in 2000, and sailed the Panama Canal in 2009.
Duane had many hobbies including woodworking, studying history, gardening, genealogy, traveling, and making fruit leather, jams, and jerky. Above all, Duane loved his family and loved family time with all the kids especially Christmas Eve and summer bar-b-cues out on the patio.
Duane was preceded in death by his first wife Elvia in 1995, and daughter Kelly in 1997.
Duane is survived by his wife Diana Petrie of Anacortes, WA; oldest son Mike Petrie of Macon, GA; son Tim Petrie & Michelle and grandson Aiden, of Auburn, WA; grandson Shawn Sleeper & Karah of Conroe, TX; granddaughter Shannon Burch & Tyler of Anacortes, WA; granddaughter Jenna Snyder & Dustin of Anacortes, WA; great grandchildren Kellie, Madison, Connor, Brooklyn, Mason, Grayson, Nolan, and Camden.
A memorial service is planned for 3:00 PM Sunday August 11th, 2024, at Anacortes Christian Church. A private family graveside service will be held in the fall.
