Duane was born in Lebanon to Milo & Retha Mae Smith John. He graduated from Sweet Home High School in 1968.
He went to work for Willamette Industries in 1969 running skidder, was on the cutting crew and for the past three years ran a road grader for the company. He loved the camaraderie of his work crew.
He married Lee Ann Babcock on April 12, 1969, in Sweet Home. They renewed their vows on their 25th anniversary.
Duane was a member of the Woodworkers' Union No. 3625 and was an avid golfer. He enjoyed garage sales and antique digging. Duane and Lee Ann's goal was to visit each of the states and see the sights.
