J. Duane Hoffman, age 89, of Huron, passed away on Saturday, January 30, 2021 at Huron Regional Medical Center. A private funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 3rd at Welter Funeral Home with burial following at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. J. Duane Hoffman was born on farm near Hazel, SD on July 3, 1931 to John and Emma (Bruha) Hoffman. Duane attended grade school in Hazel, SD, for 7 years. 1 year at Branford #5, and attended High School at Vienna, SD graduating in 1949.
Duane worked a short stint as a Depot Agent for Milwaukee Railroad, then at Dicks Dairy in Bryant, SD. Duane married the love of his love Joan L. Buckland on December 19, 1950. They began their lives together farming for ten years.
Duane and Joan moved to Huron, SD in July 1960 where he worked for Firestone Tires of Huron. He began employment with Northwestern Public Service in 1963, where he continued to work for 30 years, retiring from Northern Public Service in 1993. Duane was past President of Local #766 Labor Union for many years while he worked for NorthWestern Public Service Company.
Duane and Joan enjoyed retirement, and spent several winters in Mission, Texas, and Casa Grande, Arizona. Together they took many bus tours to many states, to include Hawaii, and Alaska. They also enjoyed camping with all their friends with Beadle Bums Sam's Club where he served as President of the Club for many years They traveled many places with the camping club and played a great deal of cards and dancing anytime they could in their travels together.
Duane was an avid fisherman, and was always on top of where the fish were biting, on what lure, and on what bait was being used. He also enjoyed hunting for many years, and was an avid gardener all of his life.
Duane is survived by 4 children 2 sons, Charles (Barb) Hoffman, Rick (Wanda) Hoffman, both of Huron, 2 daughters, Michelle Hoffman of Spearfish, SD, and Kerri (Jeff) Ashby of Rapid City, SD; 11 Grandchildren, and 19 Great Grandchildren. He is also survived by 4 sister-in-laws, and 2 brother-in-laws; Virginia (Merle) Neu of DeSmet, SD, Verne Larson of Minnesota, Tonetta Lunde of Port Washington, WI, Betty Brodahl of Cypress, CA, Dee Buckland of Huron, SD, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife and love of his life Joan L. Hoffman, his parents, his brother Dean (Betty) Hoffman, 10 sister-in-laws, and 10 brother-in-laws.
