Dr William Bonner Thomason entered into eternal rest with his Lord on July 15, 2023. Dr William Bonner Thomason was born May 22, 1936 to William Love Thomason and Agnes McGill Thomason in York, South Carolina. Dr. Thomason was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He waspredeceased by his wife of 57 years, Barbara Amick Thomason. He is survived by his son, William Bonner Thomason Jr. (Lanier) of York, SC, and daughter, Lena Elizabeth Thomason (Vikram) of Las Vegas, Nevada, and three grandchildren, Frances Harvey Thomason Light (Brandon), Sidney Lanier Love Thomason, and William Bonner Thomason III.
Dr Thomason graduated from York High School in York, South Carolina, in 1954. While in high school, he served as senior class president, and participated in football, basketball, and track. A graduate of Wofford College in 1958, he served as senior class president and was elected to the Senior Order of Gnomes. Dr. Thomason was a member of both the Wofford tennis team and ROTC. After graduation from Wofford, he was commissioned Second Lieutenant, Infantry and attended the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He was elected class president, president of the Student American Medical Association, and was a student member of Alpha Omega Alpha. His residency in internal medicine was at Walter Reed General Hospital. During his residency, Dr. Thomason was flown to Fort Gordon Georgia in Air Force One as part of a select team attending President Dwight D. Eisenhower following his heart attack. He completed his residency in urology at Brooke General Hospital and University of Texas in San Antonio. He continued to serve his country as the assistant chief of urology at Madigan General Hospital at Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Washington and as chief of urology at Fort Ord, California. After he moved to Charleston and entered into private practice, Dr. Thomason continued his military service and, after years of active and reserve duty, retired from the US Army Reserve with the rank of Colonel and Commander of the 321 US Army Hospital.
Professionally, he was a member of the American Urology Association, Charleston County Medical Society (President 1972-1973), Chairman of the Department of Urology at Roper Hospital, Chairman of Urology at Saint Francis Hospital, and a member of the American Medical Association in South Carolina Medical Society. He was a member of First Scott's Presbyterian Church and the Charleston Rotary Club.Dr. Thomason was passionate about his southern heritage, the outdoors and hunting. He was a member of the Middleton Hunt Club, served as Surgeon for the Washington Light Infantry, and Battalion Surgeon for the Palmetto guard. He was also a member of the Society of Colonial Wars, the Sons of American Revolution, the Saint Andrews Society, the Widows and Orphans Society, and the Carolina Yacht Club. Graveside service will be held at Beth Shiloh Presbyterian Church in York, SC at 11 AM on Wednesday, July 19th. The reception will follow immediately at his childhood home; 1424 Charlotte Highway, York, SC 29745. Donations may be made to MUSC Children's Hospital.
