Dr. Walter R. Voyles
Waynesboro, GA - Dr. Walter R. Voyles, 99, husband of Gail Chance Voyles, entered into rest Thursday, November 25, 2021, at Burke County Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 1st, 2021, at 2:00 PM from First Baptist Church Waynesboro, with Dr. G. Al Wright, and Greg Coursey officiating.
Interment will follow in Burke Memorial Gardens.
Dr. Voyles, son of the late Ethlyn Annette Jones Voyles and Walter Raleigh Voyles, Sr, was born in Memphis, TN. He attended Union University in Jackson, TN, and joined the United States Army in 1940. He served in World War II and achieved the rank of Captain before his discharge. He completed PreMed at Vanderbilt University, then graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in 1950, finishing first in his class. He served his internship at John Gaston Hospital in Memphis, and his surgical preceptorship under G. Frank Jones, MD. He became a General Surgery Resident at the Medical College of Georgia, and joined the full time surgical faculty in 1958. He practiced General Surgery at the Burke County Hospital from 1959 until his retirement in 1988. He was then Assistant Professor in the Clinical Department of Gross Anatomy at the Medical College of Georgia from 1989 until 2003. He was a member of FACS, AOA, and the Moretz Societies.
He was a member of First Baptist Church Waynesboro for 62 years, serving as Deacon, and being a member of the Spares and Pairs Sunday School Class, and the B.A.L.L. Senior Adult Club.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathyrn Edmondson Voyles.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his daughters, Patricia Blount (Whit), of Charlotte, NC, and Elaine Condon (Lawrence), of Charleston,SC; his stepson, Reuben Chance (Debra), of Augusta; his grandchildren, Kathryn Blount (Benji Burrell), of Asheville, NC, Whit Blount III (Dannielle), of Charlotte, NC, Margaret Head (Jimmy), of Charleston, SC, Raleigh Cate Chance, of Augusta, and Pen Chance (Melissa), of New York, NY; and his great grandchildren, Ethan Blount, Austin Blount, and Caroline Head.
Active pallbearers will be Walt Seeger, Al Perkins, Brian Murray, Chris Sylvester, Ashley Hammett, and Stephen Murray.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Spares and Pairs Sunday School Class of First Baptist Waynesboro.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, from 1:00 PM until the hour of service at the church.
