Mac Brannen was born on September 19, 1930 in Spur, Texas to Dr. Malcom Harris Brannen & Alva Jean Morrow Brannen. Mac's father was the town dentist and his mother was a nutritionist with the Red Cross and a high school teacher. Mac's upbringing in the small town of Spur, Texas, profoundly marked and shaped him for the remainder of his life. Mac graduated early from Spur High School in 1947 and he subsequently enrolled and graduated from The University of Texas at Austin ("Hook 'Em Horns"!). As a result of Mac's love for the medical sciences and his desire to serve and care for others, Mac attended and graduated from the University Of Texas Medical School in Galveston, Texas where he met and married a beautiful young nursing student, Peggy Barbara Ward, on August 8, 1953. Mac & Barbara had 3 children: David, Jim & Jody. Mac was a proud Army veteran having completed his military commitment by serving as a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division in Ft. Campbell, Kentucky and he ultimately obtained the rank of Captain. Mac thereafter completed his dermatological residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI and moved and settled his young family to Austin, TX in 1961.
Mac operated a successful dermatology practice in Austin, TX for 34 years and he moved to Kingsland, TX in 1984 with his wife Barbara, where he served as a President of the Kingsland Lions Club and was a member of the Kingsland Community Church. Mac's beloved wife of 37 years, Barbara Brannen, died at home in Kingsland, TX in Oct., 1990.
For the last 25 years of his life, Mac was blessed to share wonderful life experiences with the second great love of his life, Mrs. Barbie McCluer from Fort Worth, TX. Mac Brannen died peacefully at Barbie's home on July 27, 2022 having lived to be almost 92 years old. Mac's life was characterized by integrity, hard work and discipline, kindness to his family and service to others. Mac will be remembered fondly and sorely missed.
