Dr. Leland M. Hogan was born September 12, 1928 to Daniel A. Hogan and Dolly B. Simmons Hogan, in Glendale, MS. He passed away Saturday, September 4, 2021 at Forrest General Hospital. Visitation will be Thursday, September 9, 2021 from 9 - 11:15 a.m. at Carterville Baptist Church with services following at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
He was called into the ministry at the age of 18. Leland attended Mississippi College in Clinton where he met his wife and best friend of 71 years, Dona Ruth Swindoll. They married and moved to Baton Rouge where he worked for Fidelity National Bank and pastored Friendship Baptist Church in Amite, LA on the weekends. Leland later moved to Holden, LA where he served as full time pastor of Magnolia Baptist Church for seven years. In 1962, he was called to New Beulah Baptist Church in Hammond, LA, where he also served for seven years. In June of 1969, the Lord called him to Petal, MS, where he served at Carterville Baptist Church for 45 years. While serving the local congregation at Carterville, he also ministered to people in Honduras, Nicaragua, and South Africa on 34 different mission trips. In 2011, he was honored with the distinguished Alumni Award from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. In 2012, William Carey University bestowed him with an Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree.
Dr. Hogan was preceded in death by his parents; one sister; one brother; and one grandson, Jon Moody.
He is survived by his wife, Dona Ruth Hogan of Petal; two sons, Michael Leland Hogan (Debbie) of Petal and Stephen "Spike" Ellis Hogan (Kitty) of Jacksonville, FL; one daughter, Chandra Sullivan (Jerry) of Petal; six grandchildren, Josh Hogan (Lauren), Jenalee Coleman (Chase), Lindsay Wilson (Mike), Lauren Morgan (Lance), Kyle Sullivan (Cassi), and Tanner Sullivan; and 12 great grandchildren.
The Hogan family would like to thank his personal Physician, Dr. Don Conerly and his medical staff and personnel for their excellent care of our husband and dad.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Leland Hogan Scholarship Fund at William Carey University.
