On Wednesday, January 26 2022, Dr. Hugh Francis Fairley died peacefully at home in Cumming, Georgia. He was 93 years old. Born in Coleraine, Northern Ireland, he met his future wife, Denyse, in England, and together they raised four sons. He brought his entire family of 6 to the United States in 1970.
Quite the polymath, Hugh earned his bachelor's degree and MD from University College Dublin. He became the ultimate family physician, even making house calls, and was unequivocally loved by all his patients. He was a lifelong learner, artist, and amateur scientist dabbling in such fields as enameling, photography, Hi-Fi equipment, and machining. His piano skills and superb arrangements were unmatched and always enjoyed.
Hugh poured his life into his family. In spite of a demanding professional schedule, he was always available to watch a school race or a hockey game. And the world was his onion: unencumbered with national borders, he piloted his family through large parts of Ireland, England, France, Canada and the United States.
Hugh's other passion was, of course, his wife, and partner Denyse, who was born in France, and managed the household, looked after finances, and kept the boat afloat. He developed a passion for France that included tent camping from a tiny British car with 4 children fighting in the backseat. He became very close with our extended French family in later years.
Hugh is the end of an era in Fairley history. As the oldest boy of his large Irish house, he was the rock upon which the rest of the family stood. He brought the Fairleys to the United States, and his grandchildren here are now beginning their own broods. He put more value on honesty and trust and doing the right thing than on any grand accomplishments. He set a high bar for the next generation, and he is sorely missed.
Hugh is survived by his brother Michael, sister Theresa, sons Patrick (Kim), Christopher (Diane), and Maurice (Christina), and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and a great-grandson. He is predeceased by his wife Denyse, his sister Patsy, his brothers Joseph and Brian, and his son Peter.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday February 3 at 11AM at Christ the King Parish/St. John's 72 South Main Street, Concord.
Burial will follow in the Calvary Cemetery, Concord.
The Waters Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
