Dr. Abbigail J. Armstrong, 50 of Gastonia, NC and formerly Chesterfield, SC, was born December 7, 1972 in Sumter, SC, passed away Tuesday, May 2, 2023 at her home. She was the daughter of the late Captain and Sarah Jefferson. Dr. Armstrong was a proud 1991 graduate of Chesterfield High School. She then graduated with a bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Winthrop University, where she also proudly pledged the Xi Bets Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She then taught middle school math. A life long learner, she earned her master's degree in Middle Level Education. She then joined the faculty at Winthrop University to launch an undergraduate program specifically for prospective middle level teachers, where she was able to share her love for teaching in a different way. She thrived in this role, and in 2010, she earned her doctorate from Gardner-Webb University. She also expanded her work into writing articles and co-authoring two books, Rigor in the K-5 Math and Science Classroom and Rigor in the 6-12 Math and Science Classroom, as well as providing training for teachers across the nation and in Australia. Abbigail started her christian journey at Mt. Airy AME Zion Church where she was a faithful member until she moved to Rock Hill, SC. There she joined Foundation AME Zion Church where she was very active. After getting married she moved her membership to Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Bowling Green, SC, there she served as a Youth Coach, song on the praise team as well as the mass choir. she was also a part of the Women's Ministry and the Family Life Center Coordinator. She also served as the PTO Treasurer at Robinson Elementary School in Gastonia, NC. She leaves behind to cherish her memories her husband of 19 years; Caldwell "Jerome" Armstrong, she is survived by one daughter; Asheland J. Armstrong, one son; Justin C. Armstrong, three Godchildren; C.J. Addison, Prescott Jefferson and Destiny Lee-Brice, mother-in-law; Brenda Oates, her father-in-law; Caldwell Stafford, two brothers-in-law; Melvin Armstrong (Melissa) and Darrell Armstrong, two sisters-in-law; Phyllis Whistine (James) and Deidra Armstrong, two uncles; Howard Jefferson and Edger Willie Armstrong, six aunts; Helen Rivers, Katherine Jefferson, Betty Armstrong, Flora Armstrong, Annie Springs (Shelly, Sr.) and Jackie Caldwell, great aunt; Catherine Armstrong, four special sisters; Sherice Nivens, Joann Ashe, Tiffany Burris (Eric), Thomasina Brice and Dr. Barbara Blackburn-Hale (Pete), one special brother; Jermaine Evans, a host of other relatives and friends. Public viewing and visitation will be held 5-7pm on Tuesday at Mt. Airy AME Zion Church in Chesterfield, SC, another public viewing and visitation will be held 6-8pm Wed. at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, in Bowling Green, SC. Funeral services will be held 1pm Thursday at Lake Wylie Christian Assembly in Lake Wylie, SC. Burial will take place at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Cemetery follow the service.
