Douglas Dean Verley, age 90, beloved Father and Grandfather, died peacefully on December 10, 2020 and was joyfully reunited with the love of his life, Amelia. Doug was born in Grand Island, Nebraska during the Great Depression to Father Ralph Vane Verley and Mother Eva Juanita Chapman Verley. He was the youngest of three sons and resided in Nebraska and Missouri during his childhood. As a child in 1942, Doug lost his eldest brother Austin who was serving aboard the USS Houston in the South Pacific during World War II. At the age of 17, Doug moved with his family to Clatskanie, Oregon. As a young man, Doug worked at a small saw mill until he joined the Air Force in 1950. Doug served for 22 years, which led him to England, Libya, Greenland, Turkey and San Antonio where he was a Technical Instructor at Lackland Air Force Base. Upon his retirement in 1972, Doug made a home in Corpus Christi and continued careers and subsequent retirements from Dupont and Valero. Doug met Amelia on Labor Day weekend in 1961 and they were married before Christmas. In an enduring love story that lasted until Amelia's death in 2010, Doug was a devoted and adoring husband. Together they traveled the world extensively. Doug was most proud that he had visited all 7 continents of the world in his lifetime. Doug was a loyal servant in his Catholic faith at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church in Corpus Christi, where he served as a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and made many close friends as part of his Catholic family. Doug is survived by his two daughters: Michelle (Scott) Mullin and Rosan (Glenn) Coyle; as well as a granddaughter, Elena Chippie and a grandson, Michael Burke. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Eva Juanita; and brothers: Ralph Austin Verley and Rex Burton Verley. Doug was known for his gentle and humble presence with a never ending capacity for love. His twinkling blue eyes and quick smile will be forever remembered fondly. His family rejoices in his peaceful passing and find great comfort envisioning Doug and Amelia once again traveling through eternity together. May he rest in peace. The family gives much gratitude to his loving caregivers and Texas Home Health Hospice for extraordinary end of life care. Doug had a great fondness for dogs and his own dog, Izzy, brought him an immense amount of joy and companionship. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your favorite dog rescue group.
