She was a graduate of Conemaugh Twp. High School class of 1947 and Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital School of Nursing class of 1952. She received a B.S. degree in nursing in 1956 from Eastern Mennonite College, Harrisonburg, VA. After graduation, she worked in Baltimore, MD, at a rehabilitation facility for children with cerebral palsy and then briefly at Memorial Hospital when she was called to service by the Mennonite Board of Missions. She served three 3-year terms as a missionary in Araguacema, Brazil, from the 1957 to 1971. She loved to tell the stories of working in the hot Amazon sun and delivering 150 babies because there were no doctors available. In between mission terms, she would continue her education at Goshen College, Indiana. After her service, she returned to Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital as an R.N., nursing supervisor, and instructor for the School of Nursing. She retired in 1984. Dorothy and Sanford were able to revisit Araguacema in the 1980's. Dorothy enjoyed singing and listening to music as was evident by her collection of records and cassettes. She is a life-time member of Blough Mennonite Church where she led in singing of hymns and participated the in ladies' sewing group. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Arbutus Park Manor for the loving care and friendship she received during the 6 years she was a resident and for keeping her safe this past year. Also, thanks to Windber Hospice and Elaine, for all the added special care provided to Dorothy. All these caregivers were her family when family couldn't be there right up to the end of her life here on earth. Family suggests donations in Dorothy's memory to organizations dear to her heart: Arbutus Park Manor, Johnstown Christian School, or Mennonite Central Committee. A private family graveside service will be held at Blough Mennonite Church officiated by Pastor Eric Lasure. A public memorial service will be held at a future date. The family is being served by William Kisiel Funeral Home, Windber. As a nurse, Dorothy felt that her primary task was not just caring for physical needs, but to present Jesus Christ, who is the Master Physician. "Well done, thou good and faithful servant! ... Enter thou into the joy of thy Lord." (Kisielfh.com)
