Dorothy Cummings Scalia, 94, Topeka, Kansas, passed from this life to the next on Sunday, January 26, 2020.
Dottie was born August 11, 1925, in Brooklyn. New York, the oldest of three children born to William and Dorothy Braden Cummings. She was preceded in death by the love of her life, husband, Vincent James Scalia and brothers, William Cummings and John Cummings. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia; granddaughter, Katherine Jones; sisters-in-law, Vera Cummings, Joan Murphy and Mae Scalia; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews, as well as Godchildren.
After graduating high school, Dottie began work as a secretary for the New York Dock Company, where she continued through World War II, until her marriage to Vincent Scalia on November 1, 1947, celebrating almost 72 years of marriage.
Dottie and Jim established their home on Long Island, New York, where Dottie had a large circle of friends with whom she enjoyed church bingo and playing the slot machines in Atlantic City. She was the fun mom who would drive the neighborhood kids to school on snowy days and could dance the twist.
When age began to take its toll, Jim and Dottie moved to Topeka, to be close to their daughter and granddaughter.
Dottie was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Topeka.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday, February 7, 2020, at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery at Fort Riley, 5181 Wildcat Creek Road, Manhattan KS 66503.
