Bennington, VT - Dorothy Edna Mallory passed away on Wednesday, April 21, 2021, at 97 years young. Born in Stillwater, New York to her parents, the late William and Minnie (Spicer) Woods, Dorothy moved to Bennington, Vermont in 1948 and married Chester Mallory on August 4, 1951 at St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington. They made their home on a hilltop in Bennington so Chet could erect his Ham Radio Antenna to reach out and speak to others around the world and where Dorothy remained until her death. Dorothy has now gone to Heaven to see her beloved Chet, who predeceased her.
Dorothy had a long professional career beginning at the New York State Education Department; continuing as a Secretary at the BenMont Paper Plant in Vermont for 19 years; and then as the Senior Administrative Assistant to the Plant Manager at Union Carbide for 21 years. In all of these positions, her meticulous attention to detail and her steadfast work ethic served her well.
Dorothy was enthusiastically involved in her community, holding various volunteer positions at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center and the Bennington Museum. Dorothy loved to travel with family and friends and often talked of their special trips to Europe, Hawaii, Cape Cod and Maine. She also enjoyed knitting and was an avid reader. She said she would travel as long as she could, and when she couldn't travel any longer she would reminisce about her trips and enjoy the photos of her journeys: and that she did. Until the very end, she retained a remarkable sharp-minded recollection of all of her travels and of so many of the rich details of her life.
Dorothy is survived by her nephews, Mark D. Witecki (David Duerr) of Schenectady, New York; Glenn J. Witecki (Gail Thorpe) both of Malta, New York; Robert Knights (Debbie) of Bennington, Vermont; William Woods (Kathy) of Mechanicville, New York; Joseph Woods (Lynn) of Troy, New York; and her nieces Barbara Comatelli (Joseph) of Stillwater, New York and Madeline Gregg (Gerald) of Johnsonville, New York. Dorothy is also survived by many great-nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband and parents, Dorothy was predeceased by her sisters Hazel Witecki and Lillian Woods and her brother William Woods.
