Dr. Dorothy Karandanis, age 88, of Stone Mountain, Georgia, formally of Epping, NH passed away on May 31, 2024 at the Tucker Wellness and Rehabilitation Center in Tucker, Georgia.
Born in Brooklyn, NY on August 30, 1935, Dorothy was the daughter of Michael Stanley Karandanis and Eudokia Geannellis Karandanis. She attended Epping schools, was a graduate of Epping High School and a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of New Hampshire with a degree in chemistry. Pursuing her dream of becoming a medical doctor took some determination because at that time most univerities were not admitting women to medical schools. Hearing that Emory University Medical School was going to admit 2 women out of 100 admissions, she applied and was one of the first women accepted to Emory Medical School.
Upon graduation she stayed in Atlanta where she practiced medicine and was an Associate Professor of Medicine at Emory.
Dorothy was a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Atlanta, Georgia and was an active member of the Avondale Garden Club and the National Federation of Garden Clubs. She loved her gardens and took great pride in growing beautiful roses.
Dorothy is survived by her sister, Eva Karandanis of Epping, NH. She is also survived by three nieces: Daphne Karandanis of Munds Park, AZ; Lisa Karandanis of Egg Harbor, WI; Stephanie Karandanis Lambdin of Winter Park, FL. Three great nieces Katherine Carpenter Battikha of Milwaukee, WI; Hunter Lambdin of Winter Park, FL; Sailor Karandanis Phariss of Sacramento,
CA. She is also survived by two great nephews, lan Carpenter of Milwaukee, WI and Colt Lambin of Winter Park, Fl.
Dorothy was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Stanley Michael Karandanis, and her nephew, Stanley (Stash) Karandanis.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association or to your favorite charity.
Calling hours at the Brewitt Funeral Home in Epping will be held on Sunday, June 23, from 4-7pm
Funeral Services will be held on Monday at 10am at St George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Manchester, NH.
Burial will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Manchester, NH.
