Dorothy Darnall Jones was born in Wabash, Indiana November 26, 1927 to Maynard Carver and Edna Hunt Darnall. The family moved to Crawfordsville, Indiana in August of 1928 where Maynard Darnall was Principal of Crawfordsville High School and then became superintendent of the School City of Crawfordsville in 1930.
Mrs. Jones was graduated from Crawfordsville High School with the Class of 1945. She was graduated from Purdue University in 1949 where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and Triton, a swimming honorary. Mrs. Jones taught Home Economics (now Consumer and Family Sciences) at Crawfordsville High School 28 years, retiring in 1985.
Dorothy Darnall and Marsh Henry Jones, Jr. were married August 19, 1950 in Crawfordsville and they were married 54 years. They had one son, Marsh Burkett Jones, daughter-in law Marci Auxier Jones, and one grandson, Corey Burkett Jones of Madison, Indiana. Mr. Jones died November 14, 2004 in Madison, Indiana.
Mrs. Jones was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Crawfordsville, and Christ Episcopal Church in Madison. She was a charter member of Department G of the Crawfordsville Art League, and a past President of the Crawfordsville Art League. She was a member of Tri Kappa and a past President of the associate chapter of Tri Kappa in Crawfordsville. She was also Chairman of the Home Economics section of the Indiana State Teacher's Association. She was a member of Dorothy Q Chapter of Daughters of American Revolution in Crawfordsville.
Mrs. Jones was a docent at Sullivan House for Historic Madison, Inc. and also for the Jefferson County Historical Society. She was a member of the Jefferson County Civil War Round Table. In 2008 Mrs. Jones published a biography of Emilie Todd Helm who was Mary Todd Lincoln's half sister and who lived in Madison in 1866-1874 with her mother and three children. This research was the result of Mrs. Jones' being a docent at the Emilie Todd Helm house in Madison during the Candlelight Tour of homes in 2005.
Mr. and Mrs. Jones lived on Marshland Farm north of Crawfordsville 53 years. Mrs. Jones was widely traveled-Alaska, Europe, Kenya, Egypt, New Zealand and Australia, Tahiti and Fiji, Canada and Mexico. She traveled on Amtrak cross country and on both coastlines. Mrs. Jones and her grandson enjoyed three train trips coast to coast and a cruise. In September 1987 she shook hands with Princess Diana in Durham, England.
Mrs. Jones was the first woman in Montgomery county to obtain an amateur radio license-her call letters were W9HRR . The family enjoyed living on a houseboat on the Ohio River in Madison, Indiana in the summers.
Mrs. Jones was accomplished in the crafts of quilting, weaving, sewing, knitting, and English smocking.
Preceding Mrs. Jones in death were her husband, Marsh H. Jones, Jr., her parents, Maynard and Edna Hunt Darnall, her brothers, Maynard C. Darnall, Jr. and Edward C. Darnall, two sisters, Marietta Darnall Schilling and Martha Darnall Bozell, one nephew, Dr. Robert Darnall Bozell, and one niece, Mary Kathrine Schilling Riehle. She is survived by her son, Marsh Burkett Jones, daughter-in-law, Marci Auxier Jones, and grandson, Corey Burkett Jones. Also surviving are her nieces, Dr. Margaretta Jean Darnall, Jean Ann Darnall Gonzales, Carol Ann Schilling Harrel, and Joan Schilling Carrico. Nephews surviving are Ernest H. Schilling II, Dr. Ralph R. Bozell III, and William Woodward Bozell.
A celebration of life service will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, March 21, 2020 at St. John's Episcopal Church, 212 South Green Street, Crawfordsville, Indiana.
