Dorothy Boman, 104, of Hope passed away peacefully at home in the early morning hours of February 15, 2021. Dorothy was born January 14, 1917, to the late Raleigh and Pearl (Mason) Wilson on their family farm in Tobacco Township. She married Leonard Boman November 18, 1934, who preceded her in death in 1990. They had four children, Leon, Nancy Vanderbush, Ella Shaffer and Carla Herkner. After raising her own family, Dorothy helped raise her four grandchildren when their mother died to cancer in 1964.
Growing up Dorothy had two cows that she milked every morning before she went to school. She always tells the story about coming across a ditch of water in the summer and she couldn't swim, she used to hang on to the cow's tail and it would pull her across. Dorothy was an excellent seamstress, cook, baker and maker of quilts. Her quilts span the United States as she made at least one, if not two or three for all the family members, grandkids and great-great grandkids, other relatives and friends. The total number of quilts made is over 100. The quilting rack made by her father, used by her mother was one possession she hung on to. The quilting rack was always set up in the living room with a quilt she was designing and working on.
Dorothy was a treasure. She was greatly loved and cherished by so many. She was called Mom and Grandma by many, many people. She will be missed by many. Dorothy's main wish was to live to be 100. She did that plus some. She was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church Edenville and of the Edenville Firemen's Ladies Auxiliary. Dorothy was famous at their fundraisers for her "Granny Cake" and also at about any community event she was expected to bring her cake.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her son Leon and daughter Nancy. Also by two brothers and two sisters. She is survived by her daughters Ella (Bud) and Carla (Gale), son-in-law James Vanderbush, daughter-in-law Ada Jane, 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren, 6 step great-grandchildren and 10 step great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank her special caregiver, Jodi, for all the care and love she showed for Dorothy.
Per Dorothy's wishes cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Ware-Smith Woolever Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be offered to the Edenville Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, MidMichigan Home Care Hospice or Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.
