Doris "June" Reed, age 96, wife of the late Albert H. Reed, Jr. of Carlisle, PA, passed away on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at Thornwald Home. Born on October 1, 1927, in Newville, PA, she was a daughter of the late Lloyd A. and Katherine "Louise" Martin.
June received her RN nursing degree from Temple University in 1949. While raising her family in the 1960s, she worked as a private duty nurse at the Carlisle Hospital and at the Cumberland County Nursing Home. In the early 1970s, she served as the head school nurse at Cumberland Valley High School and returned to school to get her BS in Public School Nursing at Millersville University, graduating at age 48. She retired from Cumberland Valley to travel with her husband and spend more time at their second home in Williamsburg, VA.
After being suddenly widowed at the age of 65, June devoted her time and energy to her children, grandchildren, and many activities at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carlisle. She was a long-time St. Paul quilter and enjoyed seeing the quilts provided to those in need. She was an original member of the St. Paul's Peanut Butter Ministry, a member of the Bethany Build, Circle 1, the Visitation and Caring Committee and helped make Chrismons for the church Christmas tree. In addition to St. Paul's, June was a member of the Cumberland County Historical Society, PSERS, and the Retired School Nurses. June also was an original and continuing participant of the Harvard Nurses Health Study, established in 1976, until her death. The Study collected data on environmental exposures, nutrition, hormones, work life and diseases.
June was "Gram" to her grands and "GG" to her great-grands. She was always ready to host the whole family for Christmas and Easter at her home on Strawberry Drive. She was a masterful seamstress who, in addition to quilts, made draperies, Halloween Costumes, prom dresses and hemmed numerous pairs of pants for her family. She enjoyed getting together with her siblings for breakfast or lunch as they solved the problems of the world on a weekly basis.
Over the years she traveled to Broadways shows, Sedona, AZ, and Disney World (among others) with her children and grandchildren. She also took a yearly "shopping" trip to Williamsburg, VA with her daughters, which was always an Autumn highlight.
June is survived by her daughters, Karen (John) Lyter, and Krista (Gary) McCormick; grandchildren, Becca (Lisa) Lyter, JR Lyter, Lindsay (Adam) Jones, and Steve (Michaelean) McCormick; great-grandchildren, Eve and CeCe Lyter, Declan and Owen Jones, and Quinn and Fiona McCormick; brother, Jim Martin; and sisters, Judy Gross and Jackie (Tom) Gussler; plus many cousins; nieces; and nephews.
Memorial Services will be held Monday, November 27, 2023, 11AM, at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, 201 W. Louther Street, Carlisle, PA 17013. Family and friends are invited for a visitation from 10-11AM at the church. There will be no viewing. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
