Doris Elaine (Greer) Nelson was born on June 22, 1927 in Oxford, Nebraska and passed away on March 6, 2020 in Kirkland, Washington at the age of 92. She was the youngest of the four children of Sidney Ellsworth Greer and Grace Lucretia Blincow Greer. Her early years were spent on her father's farm until the Dust Bowl forced the family to move from Nebraska to Burlington, Washington in 1936. After graduating from Burlington High School in 1944 just one month before her 17th birthday, Doris lived at home and worked part time while taking classes at Mt. Vernon Junior College. The next fall she transferred to Washington State College, where she met Sandy, her future husband. The couple married in 1949, and after a brief time in Washington, D.C. and Oregon settled in Marysville, Washington, where they lived for 30 years and raised their three children. After retirement they spent two years in Alaska, later settling in Spokane, Washington. Their church congregations were an important center of their lives wherever they lived. Favorite hobbies together included tending to their ample vegetable and flower gardens, boating, hiking with their children, and touring on their motorcycle and RV in their later years. Doris loved her family and friends and always enjoyed interacting with people. She served as an active volunteer throughout her life at church, schools, and in retirement at the Spokane Valley Food Bank.
When Sandy passed away in March 2016 after a loving marriage of over 66 years, Doris moved to Kirkland to be near daughter Eileen. She is survived by daughters Diane Blaurock (Tuebingen, Germany) and Eileen Uebelacker (Kirkland, Washington), son Bruce I. Nelson (Colville, Washington), brother-in-law Bruce E. "Ben" Nelson (Redmond, Washington), as well as 14 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Doris will be sorely missed and remembered with love and gratitude by all who knew her.
A memorial service will be held to honor and remember Doris on Saturday, April 30 at 11:00 am at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, 10021 NE 124th Street, Kirkland, WA 98034.
