Doris Anderson Merritt
Air Force Wife
Mom was born in 1917, the daughter and only child of Albert Anton Anderson, a carpenter/contractor and the son of Danish immigrants, and of Harriet Alberta (nee) Stiffler, from a farming family in Redlands, California. She entered the University of California in Berkeley and graduated in the late 1930’s with a degree in history. She married my father, Ralph LeRoy Merritt, Jr., a Second Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps Reserve, on December 21, 1939. My father was a flight instructor at Mather Field near Sacramento until late 1944, when he went to Germany for combat duty, and my sister Marilyn and I were born in Sacramento. After the war, Mom joined Dad in El Paso, Texas, were he was assigned to Biggs Field. Dad’s career took the family to South Carolina, Alabama, Virginia, Germany (where my brother Jim was born), North Carolina, and finally to Nevada, where Dad retired in 1962. They lived for many years in Davis, California, before moving to Air Force Village West near Riverside, California, in 1991. Mom was never in good health, and cancer struck twice in her later years, the second occurrence leading to her death in 1992.
