Donald D. Roy, 88 of Sullivan Street in Claremont, died peacefully on Sunday (Feb. 27) surrounded by his family. He was born in Berlin, NH on August 15, 1933 the son of Louis E. and Lydia (Drouin) Roy and had been a Claremont resident since 1963. He was a graduate of Notre Dame High School, Class of 1951 where he served as president of his class for four years as well as goalie for the hockey team. Following high school Don played semiprofessional Hockey for the Berlin Maroons tending the net. He had been employed as a foreman by the Brown Company in Berlin, NH. He was a veteran of the US Army, serving during the Korean War. He graduated from New England Institute of Mortuary Science in 1959. Don then began his career in funeral service working for Fleury Funeral Home in Berlin, NH, Knight Funeral Home in Windsor, VT, McCusker Funeral Home in Claremont, NH before he and his wife, Doris opened Roy Funeral Home on April 1, 1973. He and Doris retired in 1996 and wintered for many years in Dade City, FL where they enjoyed the sun, golf and making new friends. He was an avid golfer both here and in Florida. He was a member of the Fr. Cote Council #1820 3rd and 4th degree Knights of Columbus. Don was a quiet man and led by example, a trait that he will long be remembered for. Members of his family include, two sons, James R. Roy and his wife, Lori, Claremont, NH, Jon D. Roy and his wife, Sheila Pierson-Roy, Strafford, NH; eight grandchildren, Michelle Roy, Benjamin Roy, Timothy Roy, Kayla Roy, Zachary Schucart, Nicholas Roy, Jordan Schucart, Hayleigh Roy, six great grandchildren, Calvin, Reagan, Leah, Mason, Turner and Pierson, a sister, Louise Roy and her husband, Eduardo Suarez, Sherbrooke, PQ, Canada, a brother, Maurice Roy and his wife, Debbie, Ayers Cliff, PQ, Canada and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by the love of his life, Doris (Jutras) Roy, two brothers, Dr. Richard Roy, David Roy and a sister, Gloria Mastro. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Saturday (March 5) at St. Mary's Church with the Rev. Sebastian Susairaj, officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may call at the Roy Funeral Home on Thursday from 4 - 7 pm.
