Donald Lee Ross, 78, passed away peacefully at home on January 26, 2022, with his wife and daughter by his side after a long illness and a life well-lived.
Born in Baltimore, MD, to Carl Lee Ross and Stella Gantt Ross, he grew up in Morganton, NC, and graduated from Morganton High School. Don was a four-year US Navy veteran, serving on the USS Everglades. After service, he attended Gaston College and graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering. Don worked 32 years for Southern Bell/BellSouth, retiring in 2000 in the position of NC Safety Manager. He is a former member of the board of directors for The Safety and Health Council of North Carolina.
Don had a special bond with nature and was the ultimate outdoorsman and sportsman. He belonged to several outdoor sporting organizations. He was a devoted family man adored by his wife, daughter and granddaughters. He is predeceased by his parents and nephew, Barry Poteet. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, soul mate and love of his life, Vicki; his adoring daughter, Laura Ross, and granddaughters, Emma Caroline Smith and Anna Claire Smith; his loving sister, Rita Poteet, and her husband, Garry, and their children and grandchildren, Rodney Poteet (Renee), Derrick Poteet (Alicia Bean), Andrew Poteet, Alex Poteet and Allison Poteet; and his mother-in-law, Margaret Lee, and brother-in-law, Edward Lee.
Don will be eternally cherished and forever missed.
A private gathering to honor Don will be held in the Spring.
