Donald G. McNeil, 89 Swampscott - Retired Lynn Firefighter Donald G. McNeil age 89 of Swampscott, formerly of Lynn, died peacefully at his home surrounded by family on Friday July 1, 2022. He was the husband of Betty L. (Stickney) McNeil with whom he shared 65 years of marriage. Born and raised in Lynn he was the son of the late Frank and Catherine (Cooper) McNeil. He attended Lynn schools and lived in Lynn until 2000 prior to moving to Swampscott. Donald was a Korean War Veteran. He proudly served in the US Army's 11th Airborne Division in Kentucky and the 7th Calvary, stationed in Japan. He worked as a Lynn Firefighter from 1963 until his retirement in 1995, primarily assigned to Engine 7 on Pine Hill. He was a devoted father and grandfather who loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed walking the beach and meeting friends at Dunkin Donuts twice a day. He had a great sense of humor that would always put a smile on the face of others. He was an avid reader, lover of country music and danced a mean jitterbug. Donald's family would like to thank his many caregivers, especially Gina and special friend Doris Villa who helped to keep him home where he dearly wished to be. In addition to his wife, he is survived by 3 daughters; Susan Cawlina and her husband Richard of Peabody, Kelley Bourgeois of Peabody, and Kathleen Gunderman of Lynn, 4 grandchildren; Paul Bourgeois, Bruce Morin, Daniel Cawlina, and Aimee Cawlina, 2 great grandchildren Olivia Bourgeois and Bennett Bourgeois, a sister; Barbara Goulet and her husband Wilfred, a brother William Alphen and his wife Margie of Tamworth NH and a Sister in law Lynn McNeil of Lynn, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Frank McNeil Jr. and Margaret Cantin. Service Information: A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, July 8, 2022 at 12:00PM in Pine Grove Cemetery. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to gather at the main gate of the cemetery at 11:45AM.
