Donald Hugh Jones, Jr., age 79, of Newport, passed away at his home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, July 5, 2022. Donald was an avid golfer, tennis player, and bowler. He truly enjoyed his golf trips with his friends. He loved the outdoors. He loved watching the VOLS and Peyton Manning. He was an usher at both Thompson Boling Arena and Neyland Stadium, where he enjoyed his football and basketball games. After serving in the US Army, he returned to Newport, retiring from the Newport Housing Authority after 35 years of service. Donald was a lifetime member of Kiwanis International where he was an active member of the Newport Kiwanis Club until his health declined. He served as LTG of Division 5 and served as President of the local club on two separate occasions, where he also served as secretary for many years. Donald was a Kiwanis advisor to the Cosby High School Key Club where he was very supportive of the youth in their endeavors. Donald was also a member of First Baptist Church of Newport, where he held the position of Treasurer for many years. He was currently serving on the Board of Directors of Sunset Gap Community Center.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Aletha Balch Jones, sister, Fredricka Jones. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Audrey Blanchard Jones; daughter, Donna Sue Jones; son, Donald H. Jones III (Trey). He was affectionately known as Pop to his grandsons, Charles Henry (Charlie), and Peyton Indiana Jones, whom he loved very much; Maica Lafuente Garcia and Monica Rodriquez Marcos, who spent time with the Jones family, and were like daughters to him; sister, Peggy Knotts, of Mountain Home, AR; brother, David Jones, of Florida.
A special thank you to UT Hospice nurse Christy Taylor Turner, CNA Dee Gobble, and Chaplain Jeremy for the special love and care you provided to him and his family, words cannot express how grateful we are to this group for the love and care we received.
Family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 12, 2022, from 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm at Resthaven Memorial Gardens Chapel. Service will begin at 2:30 pm, Reverend Rob Myers, and Chaplain Jeremy Gilmer officiating, with inurnment to follow. Military Honors provided by Pigeon Forge Honor Guard. Resthaven Funeral Home is honored to serve the Jones family.
