Donald John Wallace III, 79, passed away peacefully on January 12th, 2021 with family by his side.
He was born on May 17, 1941 to Jack and Doris Wallace in Houston, Texas. He moved to Albuquerque as young child where he learned to spell Albuquerque in first grade. His family appreciated this skill his whole life. In third grade he moved to Dallas, Texas where he joined the Cub Scouts which began his life-long love of Scouting. He became an Eagle Scout at age 14. He went on to earn the Order of the Arrow, Vigil Honor and the Bronze Pelican Award. As a teenager, he worked as a counselor at Camp Constantine and as a Ranger at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. His desire to pass the love of Scouting to the next generation led him to become the Cub Master of the Nathan Adams Cub Pack. He later became the Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 838 (We're great, we're great, we're 838!) at St Rita Catholic Community in Dallas. He served as Scoutmaster for 6 years, shepherding many young men from boyhood to manhood. Many of his scouts went on to become Eagle Scouts, but he passed his love of the outdoors to all. His Scouts remained dear friends for life.
Don graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1959. He was a former student of Texas A&M Class of 1963 and a loyal Aggie fan.
After college Don was in Management Training for HEB in San Antonio. At one point he was asked to train Charles Butt, now HEB CEO. It looks like he did a good job.
Don then moved on to sales. He was a top salesman for Armour-Dial and Playtex Corporation. He later began working for Orkin where he became Regional Manager and was appointed to the Texas pest control board. Don retired to his ranch in Mountain Springs, TX where he raised horses for over 30 years. He then moved to Gainesville, Texas. In Gainesville he continued his life of service to others as a board member and President of the Frank Buck Zoological Society. He was also a board member and President of North Texas Medical Center. He was a member of the Gainesville Rotary Club where he was named a Paul Harris Fellow. Don also was a member of the Gainesville Economic Corporation. He attended First Methodist Church in Gainesville.
He is survived by his wife, Kay of Gainesville, his children, Don Wallace, Andy Wallace, and Megan Robertson of Dallas, twin grandsons Tommy and Tanner Robertson, his sister Margaret Miles of Dallas and brother Patrick Wallace and wife Ann of Castle Rock, Colorado.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Nancy Werner of Houston, Texas. A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
Donations can be made in his name to the Frank Buck Zoological Society or the Circle Ten Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
