Donald Eugene Mapes, 71, of Elkhart, Indiana passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at Greenleaf Nursing Rehab on March 22, 2020.
Don was born on October 29th, 1950 to Rosamond Joan Mapes and the late Norman Gene Mapes.
On October 8th, 1994, he married Connie Sue Curtis. Don was preceded in death by his father, Norman Gene Mapes and brother-in-law, Ron Hayes.
Surviving is his wife of 28 years, Connie Mapes; Daughters, Misty (Julian) Gallegos and Mary (AJ) Tupper; Sons- Thomas Curtis and Jeffery Curtis, his mother Rosamond Joan Mapes, sister Pat Hayes, brother Ed (Donna) Mapes, his grandchildren whom he adored, Julian, Avery, and Micah, and his beloved dog Gracie.
He graduated from Elkhart High School in 1969 and earned a certificate in electronic technology from RETS. Don was employed at Merhow Trailers for a few years and retired from Polytron Electronics in 2017, where he had been employed for 38 years. In his younger years, Don loved to hunt, golf, camp, and bowl. He was a volunteer civil defense worker and a member of the Elkhart Moose Lodge #599. Don loved to watch Cubs baseball, football, game shows, was a Purdue fan, and spending time with his family.
The family would like to thank Heartland Hospice and the staff at Greenleaf Rehab for their love and support during the last year.
A celebration of Don's life will be held at High Dive Pavilion on Sunday, May 8th, 2022, from 11 am -2 pm, all are welcome to attend and encouraged to wear Purdue attire or black/gold.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to be made to All 4 Animals Rescue, Mishawaka, or donor's choice.
