Donal Gene "Donnie" Cannon, son of the late Edna Grace Owens and Lewis Franklin Cannon II, was a native of Pitt County. He attended public schools and graduated from Belvoir-Falkland High School where he participated in many sports and activities. He attended East Carolina University for several semesters before enlisting in the United States Navy where he served from 1968 to 1973. He returned to Greenville and went to work for Carolina Telephone and Telegraph Company. He worked hard with the telephone company and was able to retire in his 50s to play golf. He was a member of three different golfing courses, played softball, had a boat and waterskied, and took his little sisters skating every Tuesday. He was a contributor to numerous charitable organizations and supportive of his family. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, January 27, 2026, 11AM, in Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. The family will receive friends for one hour following the service at Wilkerson Funeral Home. Donnie will be remembered as kind, considerate, and generous by his family, friends and neighbors. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Lewis and Bobbie Cannon, and his sister, Josie Wilem Van Dyke. He was preceded in death by his sister, Judith Turner, and has maintained a close relationship with his brother-in-law, Michael Turner. Donnie had five nieces: Lisa Britt, Alice Briley (Steve); Becky Yorkey (Tyson); Leigh Credle (Kenneth) and Natalie Van Dyke (Joe). He is also survived by two nephews, Luke Turner and Benjamin Turner, as well as numerous great-nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved. Arrangements by Wilkerson Funeral Home & Crematory.
