Dolores "Dody" E. Smith, 83, passed away on June 8, 2020 from unexpected complications after hip replacement surgery. Formerly of Hagerstown, Maryland she was born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada on Oct 2, 1936. The daughter of John B.B. Pryde and Gladys Jackman Pryde, Dody grew up with her two sisters Nancy and Rosemary in Kingston, Ontario before moving to Toronto.
It was as a University of Toronto student, working part time as a tour guide at Casa Loma, that she met a visiting American graduate student, Roland F. Smith, during an Easter weekend tour. After an "international courtship", they were married 15 months later.
Known to her friends, family and all who met her as a lovely and loving woman, Dody always had a kind word, was engaging, happy, interesting and interested. With her husband and their three children Eric, Gary, and Amy (Laine), Dody became a US citizen and, before moving to the Villages with Roland in 2010, had lived in a half dozen states. While noting that as the family grew, she had the "good fortune to be a stay at home Mom". She later became a licensed Real Estate agent and a part time tax preparer for HR Block. Dody enjoyed tennis, in Hagerstown she played competitive senior women's doubles as well as recreational mixed doubles with Roland. Later upon moving to the Villages she took up golf - even scoring a Hole in One! She loved games, laughter and books - her Kindle became a constant companion.
Volunteer work became very fulfilling for Dody after her children had grown. Prior to moving to the Villages, she was an active volunteer in the Schenectady JayNcees and later in Hagerstown as a Lioness. For 19 years she volunteered 3 days a week in the Washington County Hospital Auxiliary ultimately served as a board member and later as President (1992-94) of the Maryland Association of Hospital Auxiliaries. During this time, she was introduced to the PEO in the Hagerstown, Chapter I, where she served on various committees and as President. As a member of the PEO sisterhood for 25 years, the last 10 with the Villages Chapter IG, she is remembered as a devoted sister. She was also a member of the New Covenant United Methodist Church, in the Villages, enjoying her church community and especially the company of the GIFT group and the Early Risers. She loved life and will be dearly missed.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Roland; sons, Eric J. Smith (Elasah) of Pelham Manor, NY, Gary W. Smith of Dunedin, FL; daughter, Amy E. (Laine) Smith of Bedford, TX; sisters, Nancy Schock (Ray) of Oakville, Canada, and Rosemary Pryde of Toronto, Canada; her grandchildren, Bryan N. Smith (Laura), Heather G.J. Smith, and J. Baxter T. Smith; and by her great grandson, Jack Smith.
A Celebration of Life for Dody will be held at the New Covenant UMC at a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in Dody's name to: P.E.O. International STAR Scholarship, 3700 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa 50312 or to a charity of your choice.
