Dolores "Dodie" Virginia (Merritt) Crowningshield, 90, passed away on Thursday (03/04/2021) at home. She was born to Roland and Edna (Wright) Merritt on May 8, 1930 in Springfield, MA. She grew up in her favorite towns of Bernardston and Greenfield, graduating from the Greenfield High School in 1948. As a teenager, she attended the Fred Astaire School of Dance in Boston, where she would take the train and stay with relatives. Her first job at the age of 17 was at Liggett's Rexall Drugs on Main Street, Greenfield.
She married Richard Lewis Crowningshield in 1954. Dodie became a foster parent during the 1960's and was extremely proud to be able to care for the newborns that came into their home. During the 1970's, she worked at the Franklin County Nursing Home. Then she was employed by CVS for 25 years and retired. She was immensely proud to have overseen the greeting card section of the store. A day never went by that she did not have her "word search" puzzle books in her hand. There was always a jigsaw puzzle on her table that she would be working on.
Survivors include daughter Kim L. Crowningshield of Greenfield, son Stephen H. Crowningshield (Tracey Brooks) of Greenfield, three grandchildren: Kendra Crossman Watkins (Russell) of Colorado Springs, CO, Kyle Crossman of Greenfield and Samantha Crowningshield Gardner (and William) of Peoria, AZ and six great-grandchildren: Justin, Dylan, Jackson, Brayden, Ethan and Gracelyn Watkins. Dodie was predeceased by her husband "Dick" of 58 years in 2012, and by her brother Herbert and sister Sonya.
There will be no calling hours, with private burial in the spring. Arrangements are under the direction of Walker Funeral Home, 14 High Street, Greenfield.
