Don was born on November 30, 1933 in Charlotte, NC to Sam and Bess Winchester, and recently celebrated his 90th birthday. He passed away peacefully at The Cascades (Greenville, SC) on February 28, 2024.
Don attended North Carolina State University and earned his degree in Civil Engineering in 1957. He met the love of his life, Jane, on a blind date and they were married for over 66 years. Don and Jane had a true love story, and it was rare to see him without her by his side. Their devotion to each other was evident to all who spent time with them.
Don had a long career with Martin Marietta Aggregates (41 years) that took him to Monroe, NC, New Bern, NC, Columbia, SC, and Augusta, GA. He and Jane relocated to Greenville, SC in 2013 to enjoy their later years closer to family.
He was devoted to his family, and especially loved time on the golf course, enjoying competitive rounds and bantering with his brothers, friends, son, and two grandsons. His easy-going nature, great sense of humor, generosity, and love of sports made him a friend to all.
Don is survived by his wife, Jane, daughter Pam (Greg) Ellenberg, son Jeff (Debbie) Winchester, four grandchildren, Megan ( Blake) Coleman, Chris ( Lauren) Winchester, Andy ( Eliza) Shull, and Katie ( Danny) Ortiz, four great-grandchildren, Jayden and Karris Coleman, and Julia and Ilaria Winchester, and one brother, Bob (Dot) Winchester. He was preceded in death by his two sisters, Edna Winchester and Kit Blackstone, and one brother, Harry Winchester.
Visitation will be held at Mackey Funeral Home at 311 Century Drive in Greenville on Thursday, March 7 at 1:00 pm with a Celebration of Life memorial service to follow at 2:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Disciples United Methodist Church, 185 Riley Smith Drive, Greenville, SC 29607, or to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, 225 S Pleasantburg Drive, Unit C-17, Greenville, SC 29607.
