FERRYVILLE, WI - Deanna M. Olson, age 82, of Ferryville, WI, passed away at her home surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, August 17, 2021. She was born at home on May 24, 1939, the daughter of Clare and Phyllis (Oliver) Crum in a log cabin at the Willie Alvin farm on Kloak Road outside Retreat, WI. Deanna attended a one room schoolhouse in Retreat before going on to graduate from DeSoto High School. She married her best friend and soulmate, Fred Olson, on September 23, 1972, and together they united two families into one and were inseparable for nearly 49 years. Deanna worked a few different jobs over the years, including the button factory in Lansing, IA, the Trane Company in LaCrosse, WI, and she ran Fred's Bar in DeSoto with her husband for almost 20 years. Deanna enjoyed traveling, and her and Fred went to Florida and Hawaii, wintered in Destin, FL, and had a houseboat on the Mississippi River. She met many people over the years and accumulated a very large group of friends all over the country, especially a long-lasting close-knit group of women friends. Deanna enjoyed a variety of activities such as dancing and singing, fishing, knitting, reading, playing golf, and spending time in nature out on the farm. Much of her free time revolved around social activities like playing euchre a couple days a week in Lansing, gathering with her Red Hat Society girls, and bowling in her younger years when she sponsored teams and bowled in a league. Above all, her favorite interest was her family, and her grandkids, and great-grandkids, could always count on getting a special birthday card from grandma.
Deanna is survived by the love of her life, Fred; children: Mick (friend, Brenda Crary) Boardman, Greg (Sharon) Boardman, and Ronda (Bert) Hershberger; step-daughters: Vicki (Randy) Carson, Pamela Ruiz, and Donna (Mike) Paletta; 16 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren and counting; a brother, Jimmy (Peggy) Crum; and nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Deanna was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Kasey Boardman Jr.; an infant granddaughter, Hailey Boardman; her parents-in-law, Peter and Verna Olson; a sister, Shirley (Johnny) Diehl; and a brother, Billy Crum.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 23, 2021 at Freeman Lutheran Church with Pastor Lori Kleppe officiating. Burial will be in the Freeman Lutheran Church Cemetery, Ferryville, WI. Visitation will be on Monday, August 23, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Thorson-Popp Funeral and Cremation Services in Viroqua is entrusted with her services.
