He is predeceased by his first daughter, Anastasia. He was the brother of the late Konstantinos and George Pikounis and is survived by his youngest brother Nicholas of Chios, Greece. Born in France and raised in Chios, Greece, Demetrios immigrated to the United States when he was a teenager. He settled in Baltimore's Highlandtown neighborhood surrounded by the warmth of Greek relatives, neighbors and friends, and was married to the love of his life Kalliope in 1965. Demetrios spent the majority of his working years at Continental Can Company, which was later acquired by Crown Cork & Seal Company, where he later retired as a supervisor. After retirement, he cherished traveling with his wife to Greece and cruising the Caribbean islands, as well as spending time with his children and four grandchildren. Known for his sharp carpentry skills, Demetrios was frequently called upon to assist friends, neighbors and relatives with their household needs whether it be changing a water heater or repairing a plumbing leak. He willingly and gladly assisted whoever he could and when it came to carpentry and home improvement, there was seemingly no task he could not successfully complete. He was a dedicated and longtime steward of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Baltimore and enjoyed taking trips and tours with fellow parishioners. He was a devoted grandfather of Haralambos Kokkinankos, Eleni Georgountzos, Kalliope Pikounis, and Dimitrios Kokkinakos. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews.
