Delmer Nelson, 75, passed away Monday, December 7, 2020.
He was born on April 4, 1945 in Parsons, West Virginia. Delmer served in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1967, with two tours in Vietnam from 1965 to 1966. Two Purple Hearts are among the numerous awards received, including Combat Infantry Badge (CIB), Special Ops Team Leader with Rick Riscola who was later killed on 9/11 in the World Trade Center. He was a member of 1st Cav Division ACo2nd 7th.
Delmer is preceded in death by parents, Patsy and Delmar Nelson; brothers, Bobby, James, Arthur and Blake Nelson and sister, Ellen Lawson. He is survived by his wife, Terry (McDonough) Nelson; sons, Kurtis Nelson and Jason (Jessica) Nelson; daughter, Sonja Slater; grandchildren, Victoria, Jason "Jake", Nicholas, Mariena and Gabe; brother, Jason Kimber Nelson and sister, Patty Yokum; along with other relatives and friends.
There will be a walk-thru viewing on Monday, December 14th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Campfield-Hickman-Collier Funeral Home, 566 W. Park Ave., Barberton 44203.
Due to current circumstances masks are required and social distancing will be observed.
A committal service with military honors will be held for family at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery at a later date.
Delmer's life-long battle is now over. He can now rest in peace.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center Graduate Medical Education to support the education of residents who treat patients with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
