Deena Lashorn Smitherman was welcomed into this world on August 29, 1969. The first of her mother’s children and the second of her father’s. The first place Deena ever called home was Jamaica Plain’s Bromley Heath Housing Development. With pit stops in Roxbury and Dorchester along the way, she concluded her lifelong tour of the city in Mattapan, where she raised her 3 boys. Deena attended West Roxbury High School before graduating from the Jeremiah E. Burke and moving on to Roxbury Community College. Deena was most known for her passionate spirit and her powerful love of community.
Deena was able to harness her love of community and channel it into being a driving force and founding member of Mattapan’s Parent Leader Network. It was in her very own back yard where she left the most immense impact. She displayed a rich enthusiasm for uplifting and supporting the community through event planning, job fairs and resource allocation. Her efforts were recognized nationwide through speaking engagements across the country.
Deena departed this life on June 27, 2022, at 52 years old, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her father, Eddie Williams, her grandmother, Calester McConnell, and several aunts and uncles. Deena is lovingly remembered by her three sweet sons, Marshawn, Deon, and Ethan, her devoted mother, Wanda Faye, her big little brother, Harold, her three sisters, Dionna, Delanie, and Kai, her adorable granddaughter, Nova, 12 nieces and nephews, and several great nieces and nephews.
