Mrs. Debbie Long, 69, of Point Venture, Texas passed away on November 16, 2024, at the Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Temple, Texas.
Debbie was born in Victoria, Texas on November 30, 1954 to Gene Selby and Mary King Selby. After Debbie graduated from Victoria High School, she went to the University of Texas at Austin to study elementary education, receiving her bachelor's degree in 1976. She later attended the University of Houston-Victoria where she earned her Master's degree in Education Administration and Supervision.
Debbie was a dedicated educator who influenced the lives of the children that she taught directly and those who were taught by the educators that she helped train. Debbie taught at Williams and Zilker Elementary in the Austin Independent School District as well as Methodist Day School, University of Houston-Victoria Day Care Center, and Juan Linn Elementary in the Victoria Independent School District (VISD). She was especially proud of her work as the founder and first coordinator of the Parents as Teachers program for VISD. She retired after working at Giddens Elementary in the Leander Independent School District (LISD) where she later served as a vice principal. She ended her career in education working for the Texas Tech University system supervising students earning their teacher certification as teachers.
Debbie married the love of her life, Marty Long on June 30, 1973 in Victoria, TX. The couple initially lived in Austin after their wedding. The couple had two sons, Jeffrey and Justin Long. After the birth of Jeffrey in Austin, the couple returned to Victoria where Justin was born. They raised their sons in Victoria before moving to Point Venture near Lake Travis in 1999.
Debbie loved to travel and accompanied Marty to Canada, Italy, France, Ireland, Russia, Indonesia, Singapore, Scotland, and England. She also saw a great deal of the United States by attending several conferences with Marty. Debbie enjoyed meeting new people and made lifelong friends wherever she went. She also loved to work in her front garden and took great pride in her plants and flowers. Her garden was so notable that people used it as a landmark. Debbie was very active in the Lago Vista Women's Club and ran their Bunco group. She was also active in her church, Trinity Anglican of Jonestown.
