
Dean Albert Barnett
IN MEMORY OF MY FATHER
My father was born in Eldridge, Walker County, Alabama on September 28, 1920; son of Rev. Mays Milton and Vannie James Barnett. Most of his education was received from schools set up by the Baptist Mission Board where my grandfather was principle and minister. The family moved back to Greenville around 1929. When my grandfather died in 1932 my father was 12 years. In June of 1932, my grandmother was offered a cottage home at Connie Maxwell Orphanage in Greenwood, South Carolina. My father was a 1942 graduate of Greenwood High School. In 1942 he enlisted in the United States Navy. He was a gunners mate 3rd Class on a PT. Boat.
Did to an engagement with a Japanese Destroyer the PT. Boat was split in half and was thrown into the water. He was in the water for about 60 hours before being rescued. He was discharged in 1944. Between 1944 until 1950 he spent some time in Greenwood and Greenville.
On March 11, 1950 at Park Place Baptist Church he married my mother, Mrs. Lois Louise Mosteller Davis. Out of this union they had four children, Sharon Ruth Barnett, Robert Dean Barnett, Lydia Jeanne Barnett and Angela Lois Barnett. He also had one step-son, Ronald James Davis.
From 1950 daddy made his home Greenville, County, South Carolina where he worked as a truck driver for Meador's Candy Company.
On April 3, 1981 daddy died at his home 13 Bristol Drive, Taylors, Greenville County, South Carolina and had graveside services at Woodlawn Memorial Park. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Mays Milton Barnett Jr. and one sister, Lila Barnett Tench and was survived by two sisters, Mary Barnett Smith from Charlotte, North Carolina; three brother s, James Long Barnett from Bennettsville, South Carolina, Luther Zedic Barnett from Charleston, South Carolina and Lee Prince Barnett from Lake Tahoe, Nevada.
