Deacon Jose Ibarra Moreno, of Mt. Pleasant Texas, passed away peacefully in the late evening of June 22, 2022, at the age of 87, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Jose was born on November 26, 1934, in Durango, Mexico. Jose met his wife, Alicia, in Texas and together they began and raised their family in Texas.
Jose received his calling from God in 1974 and, with the support of his wife, became an ordained Deacon of the Catholic Church. He served St. Peter and Paul in Dumas, TX, St. James in Sulphur Springs, TX, and St. Michael's Catholic Church of Mt. Pleasant TX until his retirement Mass on April 23, 2022. While serving as a Deacon, Jose owned a Shamrock gas station and worked at the Shamrock Oil & Gas plant in Dumas TX. Jose made great contributions to his communities through his organization of community dances, hosting a radio show, coaching an adult baseball team, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. At the age of 42, Jose started and ran a successful cattle ranch in East Tx and in 1985, he began working as a public servant for the Immigration Naturalization Service until 2018.
Jose is preceded in death by his wife Alicia; sons Robert and Leopoldo; and parents Leopoldo and Maria Camarena. Jose is survived by daughters Maria Basaldua; Frances Leatherwood and husband Robert; Alice Williams and husband Mark; and son Joe Moreno; nine grandchildren, Robert Moreno Jr.; Adrian Moreno; Eric Moreno; Kenneth Basaldua; Valen Workman; Seth Leatherwood; Quentin Leatherwood; Alicia Janay Williams; and Brian Williams; eleven great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; sisters Alicia Montemayor; and Hortencia Sierra; and brothers Raymond Camarena; and Leopoldo Camarena Jr.
Viewing for the public begins at 6 p.m. and the Rosary will begin at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, at the Bates-Cooper-Sloan Funeral Home, 2805 S. Jefferson St. Mt. Pleasant, Texas 75455.
Bishop Joseph Strickland, of the Tyler Diocese, will preside at a funeral Mass on Thursday, June 30, 2022, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, 1403 E. 1st St. Mt. Pleasant, Texas 75455, at 9 a.m.
Jose will be laid to rest next to his wife and sons at Nevills Chapel Cemetery.
